A reflection of the thoughts rumbling through my brain, if only I could be learning more / have more time...then my life would be perfect /easier /more spiritual (delete at will to suit the headstate of the moment!) For many moments we can easily forget the truth of the matter:
"the primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but the thoughts we have about it. Be aware of the thoughts you are thinking" (Eckhart Tolle)
Constantly not being at peace in the moment creates a feeling of unease and dissatisfaction, with a lack of connection to yourself and others around you. Sometimes it is easy to fall into a negative mindset, which will sap your strength and resolve. What is required is a constant consciousness, a gentleness towards your inner Self. With an awareness of the thoughts we think, the words we speak and the actions we take. So easy to type, yet so, so much harder to do. Try not to do battle with yourself in this quest for peace – the never ending cycle of moments of clarity, apathy and remorse. Instead aspire to be soft and gentle, a small challenge faced each day…working towards the space you need to be in.
A practice that I’ve found really helpful:
Connecting to a grounding / calming pranayama practice.
Breathing in, gently and deeply through the nose.
Breathing out, gently and deeply through pursed lips.
Can also be practiced as a meditation technique when the mind feels very busy or burdened with repetitive thought patterns.
Try combining the breath awareness with visualisation: breath in: simply holding the thought/feeling in your awareness (visualising cupped hands is a gentle way of ‘holding’), breath out: feel as though you can dissolve the thought/feeling, letting it go into the present moment without attaching/identifying with it as much...keep practicing until the intensity settles. Can be practiced anywhere, anytime!
